OUR STORY
coffee is our world, join us and savour the moment.
At KAFFEEHAUS we care deeply about our relationships from bean to cup, the enviroment, social values and, of course, your coffee experience. Coffee is our world, join us and savour the moment.

Situated in the heart of County Durham, KAFFEEHAUS is a family run coffee roastery dedicated to crafting memorable coffee experiences. Every cup is a reflection of their commitment to quality, sustainability and community.
Having grown up in Austria and Germany, with a coffee culture that favours as freshly brewed filter coffee, Bernhard and Carina established KAFFEEHAUS Amadeus in Lanchester in 2013 to bring a slice of Austria and its coffee culture to County Durham. Offering various single origin beans, they set out to teach and train people around the North-East about speciality coffee and quality freshly filtered V60 coffee.
Now, almost a decade later, this father-daughter team continue to share their passion for ethically sourced quality coffee through their roastery in Durham.
By roasting speciality coffee beans from all over the world and supplying them across the UK to home brewers and businesses alike, they want to showcase the wonderful array of varying flavours that can exist within the speciality coffee industry.
Bernhard and Carina’s personal relationships with coffee growers and green bean suppliers ensure every bean they roast is of the highest quality, ethically sourced and sustainably harvested. They believe in fair trade and work closely with farmers who respect the soil and care for their crops, protecting both the environment and their livelihoods.
The principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are applied across their business and they continue to strive to improve efficiency. They use an Air Motion roaster to drastically reduce energy consumption and emissions, and have opted for recyclable coffee packaging to reduce waste.
To further their commitment to the community, they proudly support Point North and the North East Community Forrest contributing to initiatives that nurture and uplift their neighbours and local enviroment.

MEET THE KAFFEEHAUS TEAM

BERNHARD
founder & head roaster
When I first moved to Durham in 2003, it was hard to find a coffee shop where I could satisfy my Austrian coffee experience. Something had to be done, I left academia, trained and learnt about coffee, and in 2013 started my own business Kaffeehaus Amadeus in Lanchester.
During those early years, I have enjoyed delivering coffee workshops and teaching people about speciality coffee. Having taster sessions, crunching coffee beans, brewing together, tasting various coffees and exchanging flavour notes, was always a highlight for me. The desire to create something more personal and roast my own coffee was the obvious next step and in 2020, joined by my daughter Carina, the roastery KAFFEEHAUS was born.
Coffee beans come from a certain origin and have unique characteristics due to climate, soil, farming and processing methods. However, it is ultimately up to myself as a roaster to determine a specific roast profile and what subtle flavours to bring out in a bean. When I finally hold a cup of my freshly roasted and brewed coffee, I feel I’m in heaven. From building relationships with coffee producers and learning about their hard work to the final product in my cup, it is a journey of discovery that excites me every time. To share this experience with customers and people I meet along the way completes the coffee journey.
CARINA
founder & head barista
My passion for coffee is a love that slowly crept up on me and continues to develop. It’s a never-ending journey of exploration and discovery really – an adventure for the senses!
Coffee has a very strong social connection for me which has always made it an important part of my life even before I acquired a taste for it. Growing up in Germany with the ‘Kaffee und Kuchen’ culture, coffee time was treasured as time for family and friends to gather, catch-up and just be present together enjoying each other’s company. Dad and I really value that, it’s an integral part of our ethos, hence our slogan ‘Savour The Moment’.
After finishing my A-levels, I decided to do a Foundation Year in Art & Design at the University of Sunderland and then stayed on to complete a BA in Fine Art. Whilst at Uni I continued to work in the hospitality industry by working part-time in a local café during the week and on weekends I would often travel home to Durham to help dad out at his café, Kaffeehaus Amadeus. Post Uni, it was an easy decision to stay in the coffee industry and work with my dad – we’re a pretty great team. Together we realised our dream of roasting our own coffee. Setting up our roastery KAFFEEHAUS has been an amazing journey so far and we’re excited for what the future has in store for us!

MAYA
barketing manager
Maya joined the team in 2022 and soon rose to the title of Barketing Manager. She has a habit of sleeping on the job – wants to greet everyone who walks through the door – loves a treat or two or three, and has been known to steal a chair as soon as you vacate one. Most importantly however, Maya brings bounds of joy and affection to the workspace, her charm and cuddly self bringing a smile to everyone’s face.
